Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 throws a lot of different enemies at you across its thirty-to-sixty-hour runtime, and knowing what each type is weak to can mean the difference between a clean victory and a frustrating reload. The game does not explicitly tell you most of this information, so learning it through experience or guides like this one is essential. Here is a breakdown of every major enemy category, their attack patterns, and the strategies that actually work against them.
Standard Patrol Enemies: Painted Constructs
Painted Constructs are the most common enemies you will face in the overworld areas surrounding Lumiere. They look like humanoid figures made of partially dried paint, with brushstroke textures visible on their surfaces. Their attacks are slow and heavily telegraphed, making them perfect practice targets for learning the parry system. Constructs are weak to blunt damage and strong against slashing, so Gustave's heavier attacks work well while Maelle's faster strikes are less effective. The key to fighting them efficiently is using the Break system early. One or two Break attacks will shatter their paint armor and leave them stunned for a full turn, letting you dump damage without retaliation.
Elite variants called Cracked Constructs appear in later chapters. They have significantly more health and gain a counter-attack move that triggers if you hit them while their armor is intact. The strategy here is patience. Focus on Break attacks until their armor fully shatters, then use your most damaging abilities during the stun window. Trying to brute-force them without breaking their defenses first will cost you more healing items than the fight is worth.
Fracture Zone Nightmares
The Fracture zones are where Expedition 33 stops pulling punches. Enemies here are twisted, surreal creatures that look like paintings that have been left out in the rain. Fracture Horrors are the basic unit in these areas, and they fight nothing like the Constructs you have been practicing on. Their attacks come from unexpected angles, their telegraphs are shorter, and they have a tendency to attack in groups of three or four. These enemies are weak to elemental Tints, particularly fire and light-based abilities. Lune's skill tree has several abilities specifically designed for Fracture encounters, so make sure she is in your active party when you enter these zones.
The worst enemies in the Fracture zones are the Mirror Wraiths, doppelganger-type creatures that copy one of your party members and use a simplified version of their ability set. Fighting your own moveset is disorienting, especially the first time it happens. Mirror Wraiths have one critical weakness: they share the elemental vulnerability of the character they are copying. If you are facing a Maelle copy, hit it with whatever element her build is weak to. It takes damage at double the normal rate. The Break system also works normally on them, so you can stun-lock a Mirror Wraith if your timing is solid.
If you are the kind of player who catalogs enemy weaknesses for fun, you probably notice design details everywhere, including in what you wear. Our Ghost of Yotei Kawaii Black Hoodie was made for exactly that mindset. It is $44, understated, and part of a collection built for gamers who actually pay attention.

Renoir's Forces: The Disciplined Opposition
Enemies that serve Renoir operate with a completely different AI philosophy. They are organized, disciplined, and fight like a military unit rather than individual monsters. Paintress Sentinels are the foot soldiers, and they use formation-based tactics where damaging one can trigger a coordinated retaliation from the others. The trick to fighting Sentinels is prioritizing targets. Take out the Sentinels that buff their allies first, then work through the rest in order of threat level. They are weak to Verso's heavier attacks and resistant to Maelle's elemental abilities, so adjust your party composition accordingly.
Renoir's Lieutenants are miniboss-level encounters that appear at key story points. Each one has a unique mechanic tied to their personality and role. One Lieutenant uses a shielding ability that redirects damage to other enemies on the field, forcing you to clear the trash mobs before you can hurt the miniboss itself. Another uses a time-manipulation ability that slows your turn order and speeds up its own. These fights require you to think on your feet and adapt your strategy mid-battle. There is no single approach that works against all of Renoir's forces, which is by design. Sandfall wanted these encounters to feel like puzzles as much as fights.
Boss Enemies: The Big Tests
Boss fights in Expedition 33 are the highlight of the combat system, and each one is designed around a specific mechanical concept. Early bosses teach you the basics of the Break system and Gradient Attacks. Mid-game bosses require you to manage multiple threat types simultaneously, combining turn-based strategy with precise parry timing. Late-game bosses throw everything at you at once, including phase transitions that change their attack patterns and elemental resistances. Every boss in the game can be defeated without a single death once you understand their patterns, but that understanding takes practice.
In New Game Plus, enemy scaling makes these fights significantly harder. Bosses gain additional phases, their health pools increase substantially, and their attacks deal more damage per hit. The reward for overcoming them is access to high-tier loot and skill tree upgrades that are locked behind NG+ completion. If you are planning a completionist run, learn each boss pattern thoroughly on your first playthrough. The muscle memory you build will pay dividends when you face them again at a higher difficulty.
From the Huzi Style Collection
Renoir's forces fight with discipline and a clear identity, which is honestly a decent design brief for a hoodie too. The Sakai Clan Blue Hoodie from our Ghost of Yotei line carries an embroidered crest that gives it the same quiet authority. It costs $44, ships to 100+ countries, and holds up wash after wash.
