Ghost of Yotei, One Year On: Why Atsu's Revenge Aged So Well

Ghost of Yotei, One Year On: Why Atsu's Revenge Aged So Well

One year and six days ago, Ghost of Yotei opened its account by selling 1.3 million copies in a single day — edging out Ghost of Tsushima's own record-setting launch of 1.25 million. The month that followed added another two million, Sony confirmed the game had exceeded its sales expectations, and by mid-2026 the reported tally crept toward five million copies. Anniversaries invite reflection, so here is ours: twelve months later, the game has not faded into the shelf. It has been updated, expanded, co-op-ified, and re-packaged — and people are still talking about Atsu like she is new.

The Score That Raised Eyebrows

The critical story of Ghost of Yotei's first year is a four-point number. The game sits at 87 on Metacritic from over a hundred critics — Tsushima landed at 83 — which makes it the rare sequel that out-reviewed a beloved predecessor without breaking the formula that made the predecessor beloved. The Game Awards 2025 handed it a stack of nominations, including Best Game Direction and Best Narrative, and while the GOTY slot went elsewhere, the user side of the ledger told its own story: a 9.2 out of 10 from players. Critics arguing with themselves about a game while players quietly score it a nine is usually the signature of something that will age well. So far, it has.

Why It Stuck

Plenty of pretty open worlds fade in a year; this one didn't, and the reasons are legible in hindsight. Atsu's revenge is a simpler story than Jin's war — one woman, one list of six names, one mountain on the horizon — and Sucker Punch trusted that simplicity instead of padding it. Ezo gave the formula a colder, wilder canvas than Tsushima's golden fields. The wolf did wolf things and broke the internet periodically. And Sucker Punch spent the year feeding the game: New Game+ in November, the free Legends co-op mode in March, the Complete Edition with a story expansion and a playable Jin Sakai in October. A live year of support turned a great launch into a game people keep returning to, which is the difference between a hit and a fixture.

From the shop side of this story: Ghost of Yotei is the entire reason Huzi Style exists as a store, and a year of watching players hunt for Yotei gear they could actually buy is why our catalog grew to 34 hoodies. For the retrospective mood, the Ghost of Yotei Dark Gray Hoodie with Atsu and Mount Yotei printed across the chest is the one our long-time customers reach for — charcoal fleece, somber palette, matches the game's colder register. It is $44, ships worldwide for a flat $10 to 100+ countries, and is paid in advance via Payoneer, Wise, or bank transfer.

One year down, and the mountain is not going anywhere. If the anniversary has you thinking about a replay before the expansion, we say do it — and if it has you thinking about wearing the game instead of just playing it, you already know where the shelf is.
